Involves revellers smearing themselves and each other with mud, paint, or oil, which gives it the name "dutty mas" since "dutty" is a creole word for dirty. This type of masquerade marks the start of Carnival and is characterised by a festive and beautifully chaotic atmosphere, often beginning as early as 2 a.m. and continuing until sunrise
